It started out as an atheist rant, but morphed into more of a statement against hypocrisy. If you are a deeply religious person, you may want to skip this song.
I don’t believe in God, but if I believed in God,
I wonder what God would say,
About some of the people who believe in God and how they act today
They don’t seem happy with God’s creation
And they don’t seem to get along,
And they always seem to think they’re right
And everybody else is wrong.
I don’t believe in God, but if I believed in God,
It would seem strange to me.
How some of the people who believe in God can kill with impunity.
Some seem hell-bent on destroying the planet, and all the animals as well
They believe they’ll be raptured up to Jesus
while the rest of us are burning up in Hell
I’m not a Catholic, but if I was Catholic
I might get tired of openin’ the paper and reading about a priest
And how he expresses God’s love
By molesting a twelve year old altar boy
You might think they’d turn him in
But they just send him to another parish
Where he does it all over again
I’m not Republican but if I was
I might wonder why my supposedly financially conservative party
could run the deficit so high?
If we’re so gung ho with the military, then why don’t we honor our dead?
Why does my small government, hands off party,
Care about what I do in bed?
Well, I don’t believe in God, and I ain’t a Catholic,
And I’m sure not Republican,
You might call me a liberal
But I’m a liberal with a loaded gun.
Hey--I believe in freedom, I believe in democracy,
I believe in sex, drugs and rock and roll, so pour another beer for me.
I believe in sex, drugs and rock and roll, so pour another beer for me.
