Letters Home

A song written from the perspective of a young dad on his 3rd tour in Iraq. Like the letters I wrote back from Vietnam, this fictional guy is only completely honest with his friend.
Hello mom, I love you – and I am doin' o.k.
Thanks for all the stuff you sent - it really made my day
When I am down I think of you – I think of you all the time
But don’t worry bout me momma – I am really doin’ fine

Dad I followed your footsteps like you wanted me to do
I always have been proud of you – hope you’re proud of me too
I used to be so confident, but now it’s my third tour
I used to know why we were here, but I am not sure anymore

Hey bro, I envy you – wish I took your advise
That picture of your girlfriend, yeah, she sure looks nice
Yeah, you did the right thing, going off to school
In time dad will get over it, everything is cool

Honey, I miss you, and Little Bobby too
I know she turns five today, she looks a lot like you
Tell her daddy misses her, and tell her not to cry
And I’ll take her to see the fireworks, cuz I’ll be home in July

Hey, old friend, I am losin’ it – I can’t sleep any more
I am livin’ in a nightmare, each day worse than before
It’s always hot, my nerves are shot – I am takin’ pills because
It’s the only way to get through the day –I am not the guy I was

Hey everyone, it’s me – I’ve got good news and bad
The bad news is part of my leg was blown off in Baghdad
The good news is I am coming home and I am never going back
But I am gonna miss my buddies, who I am leaving in Iraq
